Indoor Vertical Food Systems Design

Indoor agriculture technologies such as low-cost LED lights have revolutionized how food is
produced for the built environment. Indoor food production is now mainstream. Anchor has
been an early leader in space-efficient, vertical systems that grow food to meet the needs of
building inhabitants. While vertical farms have focused on warehouse-sized indoor farms, we
have pioneered food systems that fit the smaller scales of residential, community and small-
business buildings. These are highly flexible systems that provide building occupants with a
wide range of fresh and organic food offerings, from fish to leafy greens and root vegetables.

We deliver this performance through food system designs that use the full depth of the
urban agriculture toolbox, including aquaponics, hydroponics and soil-based growing. In
addition, adherence to organic standards means providing our clients with only the
healthiest and lowest-impact methods of food production. Low environmental footprint also
extends to using renewable energy and rainwater harvesting where possible, such as our Off-
Grid Food Shed built in partnership with the City of Brampton, Ontario. Through the variety
of approaches used, we can tailor food-growing designs to nearly any setting and scale. We
find the solutions that help people grow food for a sustainable urban future.
