Biomimetic Design
Bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate. Biomimicry is the conscious emulation
of nature’s genius. Biomimetic design is the abstraction and translation of biological
principles into human-made technology. It connects us in ways that fit, align, and integrate
the human species into the natural processes in seeking for sustainable solutions for survival.
There are three ways to mimic nature:
- Mimic the natural form — the physical features of a finished product.
2. Mimic the natural process – watch how things come together in nature.
3. Mimic the natural system – look to entire communities in nature.
Biomimicry Design Principles:
• Adapt to Changing Conditions
• Be Locally Attuned and Responsive
• Use Life-Friendly Chemistry
• Be Resource Efficient
• Integrated Development with Growth
• Adapt to Survive
